Oh the heavenly Mrs. Smith Cookie.  I categorize it as old fashioned because the recipe calls for vegetable shortening which is something that seems old fashioned to me.

This recipe comes from my Granny who got it from her friend, Mrs. Smith who was the mother of my father’s best friend from elementary school Donald Smith.  (Way back in 1951 – is that another qualifier for the old fashioned category?) The Smith’s owned a bunch of dairies and Mrs. Smith would make these cookies for the workers.  The recipe is great because it makes a ton of cookies (like 4 dozen!) and are customizable.  My father’s favorites are with the addition of gum drops.  (Which is another old fashioned thing about them… gum drops?)

So have at it friends!

MRS. SMITH COOKIES
2 c brown sugar
2 c white sugar
2 c Crisco or I use Spectrum Organic Vegetable shortening
2 eggs
5 c flour
2 tsp baking soda in 1/4 c hot water
2 tsp baking powder
Preheat oven to 350 degrees
Cream the sugars and shortening then add the eggs and the baking soda/water mix.  Sift flour and baking powder and add to mixture.  Add chocolate chips, bittersweet/semisweet/milk/combo (1 bag) or whatever you want… it is that flexible!  Drop by teaspoon onto greased pan or use parchement paper.

Bake for approx 8-10 minutes.  (My oven takes more like 12 minutes)
